This lighthouse is said to be haunted by the ghost of a ne'er-do-well who shot and killed Fred Milliken, a deputy living on Wood Island. The murderer then committee suicide. Thirty-six keepers have tended this light between 1808 and 1986, when it was automated. Several have reported that they experienced paranormal activity during their tenure as keeper of the light. The Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse give history tours of the facility during July and August. Reservations are required. Information is available on their website. www.woodislandlighthouse.org
