Moose Peak

One keeper sought refuge in this remote light from his wife and daughters, who were renowned for their foul mouths and rude behavior. But they followed him. The unhappy man, Mr. Theo E. Dodge, finally was dismissed because, an inspector wrote, although he "has always kept a good light...he is utterly unable to control either his wife or his grown-up daughters, nor can he give any assurance that...they will not return again and make trouble." The white, conical tower rises 57 feet on small, barren Mistake Island. It is not open to the public, but you can cruise nearby.

Moose Peak Lighthouse was built in 1827.
