Description

The Lincoln County Museum and 1811 Jail is home to the Lincoln County Historical Association. Displays in the parlor and dining room of the jailer's house change each year but the 19th Century kitchen where the jailer's wife cooked for up to 50 prisoners is always on view. The attached 1811 Jail (and Maine State Penitentiary from 1820-1824) is dungeon-like. Trained docents lead visitors on tours of the cells, where they can see graffiti left by 19th century French or British sailors imprisoned here. Visitors can also view original locks, keys, shackles and the jailer's logs from 1800-1954. Open from June 2nd through October 7th on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4.
