Description

The cottage has been restored in the image of Dr. Holmes's home and office in the 1850s. It contains pictures, maps, medical equipment, period furniture and clothing. The family raised five children in the cottage. The office contains Holmes's 1847 daybook along with herbs, a mortar and pestle and a traveling medicine kit. Also displayed is a Civil War medical kit and histories of two 6th Maine Infantry Regiment companies. Holmes practiced medicine during most of the Civil War. His only son was a solider in the 6th Maine and was killed at the Battle of Fredericksburg in 1863. Also on view is a wooden wheelchair and a portable traveling dentist's chair. The cottage is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
