Set atop a bold, rocky cliff at the southern tip of Green Island, this white and red-topped light marks the entrance to Hurricane Sound and guides mariners to Carver's Harbor, a busy seaport on Vinalhaven Island. The lighthouse featured a "fogbark" system in which a keeper's dog was trained to respond to ship whistles by barking on foggy days. The light is maintained by the Island Institute in Rockland, which invites the public to land at the site, but the lighthouse is not open to the public.
Heron Neck Light Station was built in 1854.
