Aroostook, the state’s largest and northernmost county, is known to Mainers simply as The County. With more than 2,000 lakes, streams and ponds, the vast unspoiled Allagash Wilderness Waterway and the mighty St. John River, Aroostook is a recreational paradise. It’s also home to a diverse mix of welcoming cultures and communities, inviting you to discover the proud “Crown of Maine.”

Maine’s “Million Dollar View,” between Danforth and Orient, affords breathtaking views of Peek-a-boo Mountain and Mt. Katahdin to the west, and magnificent lakes to the east.

In Houlton, browse historic Market Square District and visit nearby Oak eld Railroad Museum with its restored Victorian Train Station.

Aroostook State Park, Maine’s first state park, has everything: hiking on Quaggy Jo Mountain, trout fishing in Echo Lake, access to groomed trails for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling, four-season camping and more.

Presque Isle is the start of a fascinating scale model of the solar system that stretches along Route 1 to Houlton. Aviation buffs shouldn’t miss the Presque Isle Air Museum.

Fort Fair eld’s Aroostook Valley Country Club on the Canadian border offers golfers a unique two-nation experience. Caribou is your gateway to an 80-mile chain of rivers and lakes for salmon and trout fishing. And be sure to visit the Ashland Logging Museum.

The St. John Valley is where French Acadian history and culture come alive. Visit the Acadian Village in Van Buren and the Tante Blanche Museum in Madawaska and tour the historic 1839 Blockhouse in Fort Kent.

The North Maine Woods draws adventurers to its 3.5 million acres of undeveloped wilderness, primarily stretching west of Route 11. Plan a guided canoe trip through the 92-mile chain of lakes, ponds and rivers that forms the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.

The County offers 2,300 miles of groomed snowmobile trails and 1,200 miles of contiguous ATV trails with lodging and dining establishments along the way.
