Caribou

Caribou is America's most northeastern city, and a destination for four-season recreation in Aroostook County.

The city and local clubs maintain 170 miles of the county’s 1,600-mile snowmobile trail system. Caribou is a central base for exploring the northern reaches of the St. John Valley or the southern part of the county via the Northeast Snowmobile Trail and the International Snowmobile Trail System.

The Nordic Heritage Center in neighboring Presque Isle is home to one of America's top competition winter biathlon courses, and offers cross country skiing and mountain biking free to the public. Caribou’s trailheads on the Aroostook Valley Trail and the Bangor & Aroostook Trail lead to more than 85 miles of scenic adventures on former rail beds. The trails can be used by ATVs, bicyclists, runners, walkers and cross country skiers.  

A remarkable collection of regional fossil and mineral specimens, archaeology finds and geologic history can be found at the Nylander Museum of Natural History. The museum exhibits the collections of Swedish-born naturalist Olof Nylander who spent years studying the fauna of Aroostook County.

Giant snow sculptures are the highlight at the Caribou Winter Carnival & Snowmobile Festival each February. Spring is celebrated with the City Wide Yard Sale in May, and a big arts and crafts fair.
