The Aroostook County town of Eagle Lake is an outdoorsman's paradise any time of year. Eighteen mile-long Eagle Lake is the centerpiece of the 23,000-acre Eagle Lake Public Reserved Land managed by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands. The property is open to all terrain vehicles, cross country skiing, hiking, fishing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. Secluded campsites are accessible only by water.
The lake is the southern end of the Fish River Chain of five lakes stretching to Long Lake in St. Agatha. Landlocked salmon, brook trout and lake trout draw anglers to each body of water in the chain. Dickwood Lake, north of town along the State Route 11 Scenic Byway, is also a popular fishing spot.
Each January the Eagle Lake 100 Sled Dog Race brings top mushers from the northeast and Canada to the town to compete for the largest purse of any 100-mile race in the lower 48 states. A 30-mile race also takes place.
