Presque Isle

Presque Isle is the largest city in Aroostook County, Maine's gigantic, northernmost county. Home to the University of Maine at Presque Isle, the city’s weather is warm and humid in summer, cold and snowy (and favored by skiers and snowmobilers) in winter.

While a drive to Presque Isle is beautiful, you can also fly into the Presque Isle International Airport.

Things to Do in Presque Isle

There are plenty of things to do, regardless of what time of year you visit. You can even tour the Solar System.

That’s right. The folks of the County got together and built the world’s largest scale model of the Solar System, stringing it along 40 miles of Route 1 from Presque Isle to the town of Houlton. The model of the Sun is inside a building at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Tiny Pluto is in Houlton.

Enjoy the outdoors? Then check out Aroostook State Park, Maine’s original state park. There is camping in the park; picnic areas, swimming and boating on Echo Lake; and hiking trails up Quaggy Jo Mountain.

The Aroostook River offers (mostly) gentle fun as it runs through near the city. Take a trip down the river with Perception of Aroostook, which offers boats, gear, shuttles to the river and guided trips.

All year long, outdoors folks can visit the Nordic Heritage Center. During warmer months, the Center’s trails are open to hikers and mountain bikers. Come winter, the trails are groomed for biathlon and cross-country ski competition. Regular skiers, snowshoers and fat bikers are welcome as well. Nearby is the Quoggy Jo Ski Center, a small but fun alpine ski area with a T-Bar.
