Sanford

Situated along the powerful Mousam River, the town of Sanford and village of Springvale are a short 13 miles west of Kennebunk.

Following the river along Route 109 you'll soon understand why early settlers chose this spot to build woolen and textile mills. The success of these industries fueled a vibrant community which today boasts a hospital, airport, golf courses and a theatre.

As the times changed and mills ended production, the resourceful people of Sanford brought in new businesses and new opportunities, leading to a community renaissance. Vacant mills were refurbished and now house shops, restaurants and apartments.

While walking along the trails that crisscross Sanford, visitors are treated to riverfront views, restored historic homes, parks and playgrounds. Four-season recreation is offered throughout the town. Enjoy a community festival at Gowen Memorial Park, test your skill at one of Sanford's golf courses or figure out 'who-done-it' at one of Sanford Maine Stage Company's murder mysteries.

In the summer, be sure to cheer for the Sanford Mainers, a New England Collegiate Baseball team at historic Goodall Park; the same field where Babe Ruth hit his last home run as a Red Sox player.
