Calais

Calais is the ideal destination for those who want to escape the crowds and enjoy the beauty of the East Coast in peaceful seclusion. Just across the St. Croix River from New Brunswick, the town of Calais was once a major shipping port. During 1874, 176 sailing ships hailed from Calais. Whitlock’s Mill Lighthouse, Maine’s northernmost lighthouse, helped guide these ships in from the Passamaquoddy Bay and is still in operation today.

In town, visitors can stroll along the Waterfront and Walkway and observe the greatest tide change in the continental U.S. There are 40 lakes within 30 miles of Calais, and the area is widely regarded as one of the best places in the country to fly fish for land-locked salmon. Fishing camps, outfitters, and guide services have sprung up in response to the growing number of fisherman that travel here each year. Just a short drive from Calais, the 23,000-acre Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge is a great place to spot moose, deer, bear, eagles, beaver, mink, geese and woodcock.
