Greenville
Greenville is one of the few locations where visitors can experience the rugged North Woods without giving up modern-day comforts. Lakeside cabins, cozy inns and romantic B&B’s create the perfect environment for those wanting to completely immerse themselves in the great outdoors. A host of experienced guides are available to lead guests on adventures ranging from moose safaris and fishing trips to dogsledding, whitewater rafting, and weeklong expeditions on the 92-mile Allagash Wilderness Waterway. Seaplanes are on hand to ferry outdoor enthusiasts to remote campsites.
Greenville is located on Moosehead Lake, Maine’s largest at 40 miles long and 20 miles wide. Mount Kineo with its 763-foot sheer cliff, sits in the midst of the lake. In 1884, one of the largest hotels in America was located at its base. The hotel burned in 1930, but visitors can still play its nine-hole golf course. The spectacular view from the summit of Mount Kineo is well worth the hike to the top. Hikers can also seek out one of the world’s largest masses of rhyolite, a light-colored volcanic rock found in select spots throughout the state. The Greenville area is popular with visitors all four seasons of the year, with ice fishermen, cross country skiers and snowmobilers taking over from the anglers, hikers, and wildlife watchers once cold weather arrives. It is also one of the best places to spot the “Official State Animal”—the moose. During the “Moosemania” festival in spring, moose sightings are in the hundreds.
