Madison

The town of Madison was incorporated in 1804 and is named after United States president James Madison. Located at the heart of the Kennebec River in southern Somerset County, during the 19^th century the town became well known for its factories that produced carriages, window sashes, window blinds, doors and coffins. Today the area is still well known for farming and manufacturing with several active mills.

Located just off Route 201 in East Madison, on the western side of Lake Wesserunsett is The Lakewood Summer Theater. The treasured theatre opened in 1901 and since 1967 has been the official summer theatre of Maine. It is also known as the oldest continually operating summer theatre in America. The theatre has pulled back the curtain for actors John Travolta, Carol Channing, and Phyllis Diller.

The town's Lakewood Golf Course is nestled amongst the town's white pines and provides a challenging 18 hole course of over 6,200 yards with stunning mountain views. The course is the only Maine golf course that features a par 6.

Each summer, the towns of Madison and Anson join together to celebrate their heritage with the Madison-Anson Days. The four day festival celebrates the area's history with a parade, craft show, barbeque, 5K Road Race, cooking contest, fishing derby and local entertainment.

In addition to the downtown area, other Madison attractions include the Madison Public Library that is on the National Register of Historic Places and The Backyard Farms with 42 acres of tomatoes contained by two huge greenhouses. Dating back to January 2007, Backyard Farms has produced over 40 million pounds of tomatoes. Known as the tomato capital of New England, the town also hosts a Farmer's Market from June-September.
