The Forks
The Forks is best known as Maine’s Mecca for whitewater rafting. Located where the Dead and Kennebec Rivers meet, it is the starting point for experiencing the heart stopping rolls and punches dealt by the state’s mightiest rivers. The 12-mile Kennebec River trip begins on Indian Pond and roars through the spectacular Upper Kennebec Gorge, with rapids up to class IV. The even more challenging Dead River provides the longest stretch of continuous whitewater in the East. Numerous guiding companies are located in The Forks, and many offer good quality accommodations in addition to home-cooked meals and an experienced crew. Several have expanded their services to include guided ATV tours, mountain biking treks, rock climbing, and snowshoeing trips.
The Forks is a year-round destination for hunters and anglers, but come winter, the snowmobilers arrive. With more than 100 miles of interconnected trails in the region, sledding becomes the preferred method of transportation once the snow begins to fall. For those who want to experience the great outdoors at a more relaxed pace, the easy walk to 90-foot Moxie Falls is less than a mile long. Route 201 and the Old Canada Road Scenic Byway, travels through pristine woodlands and old-time villages like Solon and Bingham to The Forks and on into Quebec. It is an excellent route for spotting moose and bird watching.
