Rumford & River Valley
Rumford/River Valley area is a key winter vacation destination. The region is home to Black Mountain Ski Area, which boasts alpine ski and snowboarding trails lit top-to-bottom for night skiing, as well as cross-country trails developed by Rumford’s Chummy Broomhall, two-time Olympian, designer of the Lake Placid and Squaw Valley Olympic cross-county trails, and Nordic snow groomer pioneer. The Edge Tubing Park is a great way to experience the thrill of speed on the snow. Additionally, two of New England's premier ski resorts, Sunday River and Sugarloaf, are within an hour's drive.
Those traveling in the warmer months will find there is plenty to do, see and enjoy as well. There are beautiful rivers, lakes and ponds, which enhance the four-season destination appeal of the area. The Androscoggin River flows through the valley offering some of the best bass fishing in New England, while the town of Rumford features the “Great Falls,” highest falls east of Niagara Falls. Hiking is a popular pastime in the area; be sure to stop by and see Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox on the River Walking Trail. Camping, bicycling, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, hunting and even gold-panning can be a part of your vacation in the River Valley. Golf enthusiasts will enjoy several golf courses in the area, including one in Mexico and a new world-class course nearby in Bethel.
With the Western Mountains offering a spectacular back-drop, outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy this region and all that it has to offer.
