Georgetown, Arrowsic, Phippsburg

Feeling adventuresome? Take a chance and wander off Route #1 in Woolwich onto Route #127 to discover the small towns of Arrowsic and Georgetown. Enjoy views of salt marshes, glimpses of the Kennebec River and pine woods. Seek out a fairly hidden hiking trail for the Josephine Newman Wildlife Sanctuary. Stop at a variety of pottery and other artist studios or locally owned marinas and restaurants. The drive culminates at Reid State Park that boasts long stretches of sand beach to walk, ocean waves rushing to the shore, a warm water lagoon, rocky outcrops, tidal pools and nesting areas for endangered least terns and piping plovers. Picturesque coves and charming villages are tucked around: Robinhood, Five Islands, Harmon’s Harbor, Indian Point and Bay Point. The towns claim six lights, with distinctive styles, to help navigate from the ocean up the Kennebec River: Doubling Point, Doubling Point range, Squirrel Point, Perkins Island and Seguin Island.

For another scenic drive leave Route #1 in Bath and travel Route 209 through Phippsburg’s open fields, farms, pine woods and oceanfront. With hidden coves and many preserves (Bates Morse Mountain is one with 574 acres of natural, rare, undeveloped coastal, wetland and salt-marsh adjoining Sewall Beach) Phippsburg is also home to Popham Beach State Park. The Park is located near where English colonists landed in 1607 and the first English ship, the Virginia, was built in North America. The beach’s unspoiled expanse of sand and breaking surf includes views of Seguin Island and when the tide is out a sand bar connects with Fox Island. And it’s a great place to fly a kite in the spring!

You can explore a different time in history at Fort Baldwin, the remnants of World War I and II fortifications as well as the Civil War Era Fort Popham, which also guarded the mouth of the Kennebec River during the Spanish American War and World War I. After exploring, enjoy a picnic or surf cast on the grounds of Fort Popham.

The Phippsburg peninsula also picture perfect coastal villages, Small Point, Sebasco, Parker Head, West Point, Long Island and Phippsburg Center. Some of the villages have been site locations for major motion picture films (Head Above Water and Message in a Bottle).
