Rockland is in the midst of a renaissance, and those that visited the town just 10 years ago are likely not to recognize it today. New galleries, award-winning restaurants, and trendy shops are rapidly moving into the downtown area, and the coastal town can now be reached in less than an hour from Boston via U.S. Airways Express. From Rockland, visitors can take a ferry to Maine islands including Vinalhaven, North Haven, and Matinicus. Ferry passengers will spot Owl’s Head Light, one of three lighthouses in the area, on the way out of Rockland Harbor.
The Farnsworth Museum and its nationally recognized collection of American art are located in Rockland. Familiar names such as Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Sully, Thomas Eakins, Eastman Johnson, Fitz Hugh Lane, and Maurice Prendergast are represented in the museum’s permanent exhibit. Its Wyeth Center exclusively features the works of Andrew, N.C., and Jamie Wyeth. Rockland is also home to most of the Maine windjammer fleet. Most were built at the turn of the century when America relied heavily on sailing ships to transport cargo. Cruises are available ranging from two hours to multi-day excursions.
