Celebrate what you love most about Maine at one (or more) of the many exciting fairs and festivals around the state that fete everything from birds to boats, lobster to lupines, folk music to films and anything and everything in between.

Maine’s festivals are also a way of embracing the state’s rich cultural heritage. Celebrate Maine’s maritime tradition at the Annual Heritage Days in Bath (June - July) and the Maine Boats and Harbors Show (August) in Rockland; awe at the artistry of Native American basketry at the Native American Festival and Maine Basketmakers Market in Bar Harbor (July); and honor the rich traditions of Maine’s proud Franco-American contingent at the Acadian Festival in Madawaska (June - July) or the La Kermesse Franco-Americaine Festival (June) in Biddeford.

The state’s love affair with food from the sea is celebrated all summer long, with events including the Yarmouth Clam Festival (July) and the Maine Lobster Festival (August) in Rockland, where more than 12 tons of lobster is served up. But Maine’s food fests aren’t just limited to seafood. In Fort Fairfield, the annual Maine Potato Blossom Festival (July) includes potato picking contests and mashed potato wrestling. And don’t forget wild blueberries—tart and tasty antioxidant rich berries fêted throughout August with events in Wilton, Machias and Union.

The arts are also heralded with some uniquely Maine spring and summertime events. After all, where else do the hills really come alive with the sound of music but at the Kingfield POPS (July), an outdoor symphony concert held in the western mountains. Later in the summer, The Maine International Film Festival (July) celebrates the hits of the silver screen and in the heart of August, the American Folk Festival rocks Bangor’s waterfront and showcases the nation’s finest performing groups as they share traditional arts of their region, culture and heritage.

Maine is also home to many events that can’t be found anywhere else. Take for example the Moxie Festival (July) in Lisbon Falls, the only known festival celebrating a soft drink; the weekly Lobster Boat Races along the Maine coast throughout the summer; or the Eastport Salmon Festival (September). Who knew fish could be so fun?
