The waves looked small from the shore. But they’re huge out here.

Maybe it’s the adrenaline pumping through your veins, or the rush of the water crashing around you, but for a split second, you feel it. A complete transformation.

After a lifetime of dreaming about it, and saying you’d like to try it, here you are. You’re crossing off another item on your bucket list.

Because you’re on a surfboard. And you’re smiling.

“Paddle hard, man!” your surfing guide Barry Tripp yells from 10 feet away. “This is the big one!”

Barry’s seen a million waves, so you know he’s right. An animal instinct takes over, and your arms dig into the water, excitedly, almost frantically. You look over your shoulder and see the wave coming toward you. Then it grips your board, lifts you up, and you know you’ve got a shot at this one.

You push up as fast as you can, and turn your feet in midair. The way Barry showed you. And you stick it.

One last step now, the toughest part. The balancing act. And there’s no time to think. You’ve just got to do it. So you rise up, arms wide and loose. An ocean gush hits you on the left, and your right arm goes skyward to balance it. And at the same time, you make one final push to stand up. And it finally happens.

You’re up. You’re surfing. I’m doing it, you think to yourself, almost in disbelief. I’m really doing it. I’m king of the world.

A few long seconds later, the wave crashes and takes you with it, and you’re laughing the whole way down. Numb with happiness, on a natural high, you pop out of the water and unleash a yell of pure joy.

And you get back on your board and paddle out toward the horizon. Because you can’t wait to do it again. That’s what it’s like to surf in Maine. But surfing isn’t the only adventure to be had here.

There are ATV adventures to be had throughout Maine, where you’ll be able to register your ATV and speed along 6,000 miles of exhilarating trails. Or maybe skydiving is for you, and seeing Maine from 10,000 feet is what you’ll talk about when you get home.

And if rockclimbing is something you love to do, or something you’d love to try, you’ll find plenty of that here. And you’ll find it in grand fashion, thanks to the majestic cliffsides of Acadia, where the waves will crash below you while you climb.

Or maybe it’s the thrill of a hot air balloon ride through the mountains, or a mountain biking expedition where the turns and hills come faster than you’ve ever seen. Whatever your adventurous taste may be, you’ll find it here in Maine.

And while you’re doing it, you’ll feel like yourself again.
