Hunting in Maine

If you come to Maine to go hunting, you’ll discover an abundance of wild game across vast stretches of rural country. Whether it’s birds, moose, deer or bears you came for, they’re all here. Few states in the Lower 48 can rival the variety and quality of hunting opportunities found in Maine. And you’ll see that for yourself, once you’re here.

Maybe you’ll pursue one of the 25,000 black bears, or the 200,000 whitetails, or the 29,000 moose. And if it’s waterfowl you’re here to chase, you’ll find plenty in our lakes and marshes, and also along the magnificent coastline, where world-class sea duck hunts occur. The restoration of wild turkey has been a phenomenal success here as well, and you’ll find them venturing further north and east, in abundance.

With so many hunting options here, it’s hard to pick just one. But luckily, you won’t have to.That’s because Maine has hundreds of Registered Maine Guides, who will gladly take you down every path you wish to explore here.

When you’re ready to start planning your adventure and snag a Registered Maine Guide, you’ll find some great resources in the articles below and within our interactive map. Other helpful resources are the Maine Wilderness Guides Organization and Maine Professional Guides Association, where you can search by the type of hunting you want to do, or the area of Maine you’d like to visit. There’s also a Maine Guides directory online, the Maine Sporting Camp Association, and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Like most great pursuits here, it won’t be the animals you’re hunting that you’ll remember most. It’s the experience you’ll have here, and the excitement of the chase. That’s the story you’ll tell your friends.
