There it is, in left field. The famous Green Monster.

Well, that’s not exactly true. But it is a local replica of the famous left field wall at Boston’s Fenway Park, where the Red Sox play. And here in downtown Portland, where the Red Sox’ minor league team plays baseball, they call it the Maine Monster. The wall here is a bit smaller, but so are the ticket prices, and every seat here is a great one.

As with everything in Maine, you’ll get some unexpected surprises here at Hadlock Field, where the Portland Sea Dogs play. Of the 25 men on the Red Sox’ recent World Series Championship team, 17 of them spent part of their career here, as a Portland Sea Dog.

And that means, if you’re lucky enough to see one of the 71 home games played here between April and October, you’ll see much more than you expected. You’ll get to see some of the best baseball players in the world.

But that’s not all of the spectator sports you’ll find here, and there are all kinds of other activities you wouldn’t expect. You can go horseback riding throughout the state, for instance. It might be a private stable in the mountains, or the famous carriage roads along the oceanfront cliffs of Acadia National Park, where you’ll hear a story that starts with the Rockefeller legacy.

And there are casinos in Maine, where you can sense a bit of Las Vegas in the air. There are big-payout bingo games too, if the chance to win over $250,000 in prizes is the type of excitement you’re looking for.

Whether you’re cheering alongside thousands of fans after a home run sails over the Maine Monster, or you’re laughing with a winning pull of a slot machine, or you’re relaxing amid nature on a horseback journey, you’ll definitely realize it. You’ll realize that Maine has surprised you again.

And that’s the only thing you’ll come to expect here: the unexpected. Because just when you think you’ve seen the best here, something more amazing happens. Something you’ll never forget.
