Surfing in Maine

Maine has a surprisingly passionate community of surfers in Southern Maine with many miles of easily accessible sandy beaches. From Long Sands Beach in York, to the legendary Ogunquit Beach, to the beaches of Wells, Kennebunk, and Old Orchard Beach, you’ll find great surfing waves. York is good for beginners, and Gooch’s Beach in Kennebunk has some big winter waves. Whenever there’s a storm out to sea, surfers head to Higgins in Scarborough for some stellar swells. Fall and winter bring the biggest waves so be prepared to gear up to stay warm

The York-based Grain Surfboards crafts locally grown wooden boards for devotees. They also offer workshops throughout the year to make your own surfboard.

A twist to the sport of surfing, stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) is all the rage and a great way to explore both the state's ocean waves and inland lakes. You can even find yoga classes on the boards!

Maine’s surf shops are a great source of information and advice about surfing spots and weather conditions.
