Moosehead Lake

Moosehead Lake, in the heart of The Maine Highlands region, really does look like a moose’s head, complete with impressive antlers. This massive body of water (the largest in the state) is 40 miles long and covers nearly 75,000 acres.

Things to Do

Great for fishing with plenty of landlocked salmon, brook trout and togue (lake trout). You can rent a boat and fish on your own or hire a Registered Maine Guide who can provide local insight and expertise. The shallow waters of Lily and Spencer bays are ideal for family-friendly fishing in the summer. In the winter, ice fishing is popular—with cozy and eclectic ice shacks dotting the lake.

If you want to spend the day cruising around the 117-square miles of lake, you can rent from numerous places that offer boats or jet-skis, or take a narrated ride on the steamboat Katahdin.

Places to Stay

You'll find lodging and meals at one of the historic Maine sporting camps, wilderness lodges, or historic inns in the area like The Lodge at Moosehead Lake or the Blair Hill Inn, or reserve a campsite at Lily Bay State Park.
