The Beach at Scarborough Beach State Park

There’s more than a mile of white sand at Scarborough Beach in the state park of the same name on the ocean side of Prouts Neck in Scarborough. Beach goers will enjoy plenty of room to stretch out and relax in the sun, take a refreshing swim, and comb the beach for seashells. Lifeguards are on duty during the peak summer season.

A concession stand known as The Shack offers snacks and cold drinks, and rents beach chairs, umbrellas and boogie boards. Showers and toilets are available. Pets are not allowed on the beach in summer. There is parking for 285 cars on site and another 125 just off site, but these can fill up early so plan accordingly.

Make a visit to nearby Portland Head Light, an iconic coastal Maine landmark, which guards the sea lane to Portland Harbor. Adjacent Fort Willams Park has picnic tables and grills, walking trails, a pocket beach and numerous old fort structures to explore. At the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center take a guided or self-guided tour of Maine’s largest salt marsh on foot or by canoe to get a close-up view of its bountiful birdlife. The center also hosts natural history exhibits and a nature store, and has canoes for rent.
