West Grand Lake

Perhaps one of the best-known landlocked salmon waters in Maine, West Grand Lake is one of only four waterways that historically held landlocked salmon.The14,340-acre lake is situated in a wilderness setting in Maine’s Downeastregion.The outflow of West Grand Lake is the Grand Lake Stream, also known for landlocked salmon.You can also fish for lake trout, smallmouth bass and lakewhitefish.Ice fishing is popular here in February and March.

The lake has maximum water depths of 128 feet and rugged shorelines.While shoreline access is limited—the lake has a public boat launchat Farm Cove Dam—you'llfind Maine's largest concentrationof Registered Maine Guides and outfitters inthe village of Grand Lake Stream.West Grand Lake is also the birthplace of the Grand Laker Canoe, a long, square stern, wooden canoe produced by Maine craftsmen since the early 1800s for use on West Grand Lake and surrounding waterways.Local craftsmen are still buildingGrand Lakers, which today's guides in the area continue to prefer.You can also find lodging, gas and food in Grand Lake Stream and tourthe only fish hatchery in Maine dedicated solelytothe production of landlocked salmon.
