Heron Neck

X

Heron Neck Light Station was built in 1854. The lighthouse is not open to the public, but you can take a boat trip that includes Heron Neck. Set atop a bold, rocky cliff at the southern tip of Green Island, this white and red-topped light marks the entrance to Hurricane Sound and guides mariners to Carver's Harbor, a busy seaport on Vinalhaven Island. The lighthouse featured a "fogbark" system in which the keeper's Newfoundland dog was trained to bark in response to ship whistles sounding nearby. The keeper, Captain Levi Farnham, named this dog "Nemo" after the famous Captain Nemo in the Jules Verne stories.
